How do I restore old photos with AI?

PhotosShoot's AI photo restoration feature can breathe new life into old, damaged, or faded photographs — enhancing clarity, repairing damage, and adding colour to black-and-white images.

How to restore an old photo:

1. Go to Tools → Restore Photo (or upload directly to the restoration tool)

  • Upload your old photo (JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF)

  • Choose the restoration type: - Enhance & Sharpen — Improves clarity and reduces blur in faded photos - Repair Damage — Fixes scratches, tears, spots, and water damage - Colourize — Adds realistic, AI-generated colour to black-and-white photos - Full Restore — Applies all of the above

  • Click Restore and review the result

  • Optionally upscale the restored photo for maximum resolution

    What photo restoration can fix:

  • Faded or washed-out tones from aged photos

  • Scratches, tears, and physical damage marks

  • Loss of detail from old printing processes

  • Grain and noise from low-quality cameras or scanning

  • Black-and-white photos that benefit from colour

    Tips for best results:

  • Scan or photograph old prints at high resolution (600 DPI or higher) before uploading

  • Restoration works best on faces — backgrounds may have some variation

  • For heavily damaged photos, try the repair tool first, then colourize separately

A note on colourization: The AI adds plausible, realistic colours based on contextual clues in the image. It can't know the exact original colours (e.g., the exact shade of a dress), but the results are typically natural-looking and emotionally compelling.
